Basic Dog Training Online Course Index
IMPORTANT: please read this content first before you begin the Basic Dog Training Online Course
How The Training is Organized
We have divided the online training into 7 sections. Each section has handouts associated with it and video clips to review. Most topics have a handout and video, but some topics might have only a handout or only a video clip. For those that have both handouts and video clips, we recommend you review both. We recommend you begin with Section 1: Setting Expectations.
Expected Time to Complete Each Section
Review the relevant video clips and handouts before you begin training each topic with your dog. The amount of time needed will vary depending on the length of the video clips you are reviewing and the time you spend reading the handouts. Plan to spend about 30 minutes on a specific topic at one time, which includes the video review, handout review and training.
Following your initial training session with a new topic, we recommend you practice the principles you learned for a minimum of 5 days, 3 times per day in short sessions or until your dog is repeatedly responding the way you would like. The actual time spent training will depend on your dog and your situation, but keep training sessions short to begin. Five to ten minutes is usually more than enough to begin, and for puppies with short attention spans, even shorter time periods might be best. A few short sessions each day is better than one long session. When you and your dog are ready, move on to the next topic or section.
Don’t focus on progressing within a specific time period. Rather, focus on progressing as you and your dog are both ready. If you try to progress too quickly, both you and your dog will become frustrated. Lack of success is often due to trying to push for too much too soon. There is no one right time frame for accomplishing these behaviors. Everyone learns at a different pace, so work at the pace that is comfortable for you and your dog.
