Dog Training Classes

Group Class Locations

You will find most of our in-person classes on our full day of group classes on Sundays. We also have some classes on weekday evenings and Saturdays, primarily during the spring/summer/fall when the weather allows us to be outdoors.

Sunday classes at The Light of Dog Farm

Our Sunday sessions are held at our farm in Sedalia with many benefits to class attendees.

We have an indoor area with shock absorbing anti-fatigue flooring for inclement weather and an outdoor securely fenced area.

Class attendees are free to explore our farm prior to or following class with their dogs. We have trails to hike and benches to sit and enjoy the views. Dogs can enjoy all the smells found out in the country.

Please click here to learn more about our farm and what you can do on your visits to our location.

Weekday Evening and Saturday Sessions

Our in-person weekday classes are typically on Tuesday evenings or Saturday afternoons, held near C470 & Santa Fe and are held outdoors in the spring/summer/fall.

Here's what's included:

  • Puppy Preschool 7-session Puppy Dog Training Class.  Individualized attention from highly-experienced trainer Sue Brown; practicing since 1996; Certified Dog Behavior Consultant through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants; Certified Professional Dog Trainer through the Certification Council for Professional Dog DogTreats_Jar_cropped_120Trainers; and author of 2 books on dog training. Class sizes are limited to 5 puppies so it will not be overwhelming for the puppies and so you get individual attention from Sue.
  • Bulk package (7.5-ounces dried weight in a 32-ounce glass jar) of our Peak Power Dog Treats that we created and produce. We were so disappointed with commercial treat choices that we decided to create our own training treats, which Sue uses for all of her training. Our treats are balanced in the right proportions that mirrors the dog ancestral diet, with grass fed muscle meats, grass fed organ meats, organic vegetables and organic fruits. You do not have to worry about feeding your dogs too many of our treats, which is not the case for other commercial products. There is nothing else added…no growth hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, sugar, grains, preservatives, stabilizers or antioxidants. Everything is sourced and made in the USA – our meat comes directly from grass fed only ranches that we personally inspect and we grow some of our vegetables and fruits for our treats. We produce in small batches – each batch is 18 pounds – in our own USDA licensed kitchen on our farm. Our treats are very flavorful to dogs, which means you do not have to use much to give your dog a powerful reward during your training sessions. So, a full jar of our Peak Power Dog Treats will last you a while.
  • Our Power Tugs Natural Fiber Dog Tug Toy that we created and produce. These make a great item to redirect puppies to bite at the toy and not you. Environmentally friendly natural fiber product made from Bamboo and Hemp, not petroleum-based fleece; not dyed, adding environmental impact, but the natural color of the bamboo/hemp weave; long enough for you to hold in your hand and let dangle to the floor – approximately 45 inches, or almost 4-feet in length; soft on the mouth, flexible (with some give to it) and strong at the same time; handmade in Colorado; these can be used for any dogs who like to play tug or simply chase moving objects. We especially recommend these for puppies who like to nip, play tug, and/or make “puppy attacks” on you!

  • Individualized attention from highly-experienced trainer Sue Brown, practicing since 1996, Certified Dog Behavior Consultant through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, Certified Professional Dog Trainer through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, and author of 2 books on dog training.
  • Class sizes limited to 4 dogs so it will not be overwhelming.
  • Classes meet one hour per week for seven weeks.

This class is for dogs 5 months of age and older. This series of classes will cover:

  • Intro to Dog Body Language. No dogs are allowed at this class. You will learn how to better read what your dog and other dogs are communicating to those around them. This will help you to better understand and work with your own dog, and to be better able to pick up on early signs of potential problems.
  • Intro to Dog Training. We will begin training our dogs with response to name, sit, down, and focus exercises. Dogs should attend this class. These are the Foundation Behaviors that are the first steps to everything else we will work on throughout class.
  • Intro to Basic Manners. This class introduces you and your dog to good manners and polite behaviors, such as polite greetings with visitors, sit/wait at doorways, polite ways to request attention rather than demand it, and others as time allows.
  • Leash Manners.  We will discuss why dogs pull, why it is so difficult to stop, and what you can do about it. We will discuss and practice several methods for teaching your dog not to pull on leash.
  • Come! One of the most important things you can teach your dog is to come when you call him. We will discuss how to teach your dog to reliably come to you every time you call and not only when there is nothing more interesting going on.
  • Stay. Teaching our dogs to stay can help with a number of issues, including helping overactive or easily excitable dogs to learn to calm down, impulsive dogs to control their impulses, and all dogs to safely remain in place while you handle an urgent or unsafe situation. We will work on teaching the dogs a reliable stay.
  • Working with Distractions. We often hear the complaint that a dog will work as long as there are no distractions around or that a dog will work only when “she feels like it.” In many of these cases, the dog has not had enough training in dealing with distractions and working despite whatever distractions there are. This class will help you to help your dog learn to work despite any distractions.

One of Sue's specialties is working with retired racing greyhounds. We offer a 10% discount for greyhounds adopted through Colorado Greyhound Adoption. Please contact us for the discount code if you are paying with a credit card.

Dog Parkour is an adaptation of parkour for humans. Sometimes called urban agility, participants utilize their environment to navigate. That might includes walls, trees, benches, or anything else in the environment to jump on or over, vault over, swing under, etc. Think of it like agility but with whatever equipment is already in the environment rather than needing special agility equipment.

This class can help dogs develop better conditioning, learn new skills and have some fun.

Pre-requisite: dogs must have completed at least Basic Training, preferably at least one other advanced class. Dogs must be in good health. Just as in regular agility, dogs can be injured so we want to start out in good shape and be aware of the risks. Some off-leash reliability is also very helpful.

Therapy Dogs Class is for those working toward their dogs becoming therapy dogs. Do you think your dog would make a good therapy dog? Are you not sure? After a year they began Hope2working with children and adolescents who suffer complex trauma and spent 5+ years working at Devereux Denver and the Denver Children's Advocacy Center. In 2014 they became members of HOPE, a national canine crisis response group. Later that same year Riley, an Old English Sheepdog, was added to the team. This class is for dogs who are reactive toward other dogs while on leash. Reactivity could include such behaviors as barking, whining, growling, pulling toward, lunging at, hiding from or trying to run from other dogs. Some of these dogs are fine off leash with other dogs. Some are not. Some dogs are simply excited and want to play. Some dogs would fight with other dogs given the chance. Others are insecure and afraid of other dogs. Regardless of the underlying cause of the displayed behaviors, our goal is to help our dogs feel better about the situation and learn how to make better choices in the presence of other dogs.

Dogs must have completed a minimum of a Behavior Consultation with the Trainer and received permission from the Trainer in order to participate in this class.

Looking for fun and different ways to keep your dog active and burning off energy? Winter weather and shorter daylight hours can make it especially difficult to burn off your dog’s energy during the winter months, though fun ways to burn off energy are good for any time of the year. This class is less about “obedience” training and more about teaching your dog to put his nose to work. Some dogs are naturals, others could use some help learning to use their noses better. This class focuses on a variety of nosework and scenting activities to help your dog have fun and burn off energy.

For dogs of any age.
