Some dogs love water. Some love water in some forms and not others. Some are not big fans of water – other than to drink it.

Even some breeds that are supposed to be “water dogs” (like Labs, Poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs, etc.) do not love the water if they do not get the chance for exposure early on. If you have a puppy, get them used to water early and often – and SAFELY!

Zooka is one who loves the water. He loves his kiddie pool. He loves water coming out of the hose. He doesn't mind the rain.

Just for fun, we took some video of Zooka playing with the water from the hose while we were watering the garden one day.

We laugh about how easily amused our dogs are at times. Yet who is more amused, them or us watching them being amused?

Our previous Vizsla, Romeo, was not a big fan of the water. He hated the rain. Avoided it whenever possible. He did not enjoy getting wet other than wading into shallow water. He did enjoy playing in shallow water, but did not enjoy any water coming down on him or anything too deep to securely keep feet planted on the ground.

We got Zooka going in the kiddie pool and with water early on. In fact, his breeder took him and his littermates for their first ever swim in a friend's pool. He is cautious around deeper water, but he definitely enjoys playing in the water.

Does your dog like the water? If they are young enough, you can help them get used to it and maybe love it. The older they get and the longer you wait, without any exposure, the less likely they are to ever like it.
