This class is for dogs 5-months of age and older. This series of classes will cover:

  • Intro to Dog Body Language. No dogs are allowed at this class. You will learn how to better read what your dog and other dogs are communicating to those around them. This will help you to better understand and work with your own dog, and to be better able to pick up on early signs of potential problems.
  • Intro to Dog Training. We will begin training our dogs with response to name, sit, down, and focus exercises. Dogs should attend this class. These are the Foundation Behaviors that are the first steps to everything else we will work on throughout class.
  • Intro to Basic Manners. This class introduces you and your dog to good manners and polite behaviors, such as polite greetings with visitors, sit/wait at doorways, polite ways to request attention rather than demand it, and others as time allows.
  • Leash Manners.  We will discuss why dogs pull, why it is so difficult to stop, and what you can do about it. We will discuss and practice several methods for teaching your dog not to pull on leash.
  • Come! One of the most important things you can teach your dog is to come when you call him. We will discuss how to teach your dog to reliably come to you every time you call and not only when there is nothing more interesting going on.
  • Stay. Teaching our dogs to stay can help with a number of issues, including helping overactive or easily excitable dogs to learn to calm down, impulsive dogs to control their impulses, and all dogs to safely remain in place while you handle an urgent or unsafe situation. We will work on teaching the dogs a reliable stay.
  • Working with Distractions. We often hear the complaint that a dog will work as long as there are no distractions around or that a dog will work only when “she feels like it.” In many of these cases, the dog has not had enough training in dealing with distractions and working despite whatever distractions there are. This class will help you to help your dog learn to work despite any distractions.

One of Sue’s specialties is working with retired racing greyhounds. We offer a 10% discount for greyhounds adopted through Colorado Greyhound Adoption. Please contact us for the discount code if you are paying with a credit card.

Clickers, if you decide to use them, are extra. $2 with wrist coil.

The Basic Training class was just what we needed since it’s been a long time since we’ve had a young dog. The small class size allowed for individualized attention to persistent issues. I liked the consistent training philosophy while remaining flexible about defining our own training goals.

We’ve had several dogs through the years and have taken many different training classes. We can honestly say that the Basic Training class we took with Sue was the best EVER. The small class size was incredibly helpful to not only our dog but to us. Sue is able to work very closely with all the students (people as well as dogs!!) and focus in on what we are doing and offer insight as to why something is working or not. She understands all the layers of dog behavior and how we as the people in our dog’s life influence it. All thumbs (or paws) up!

I have had two dogs (Shelties) participate in training with Sue. Sue is very patient and positive! She truly looks at each dog and their owners to decide what works best for their particular needs. She believes in positive reinforcement and helping the dog and owner to problem solve through any issues they may be having. She is readily available through email and during class to answer any and all questions you may have. I believe that Sue sincerely wants each and every owner and their dog to build a lasting, loving and positive relationship. I could not imagine taking my dogs anywhere but to Sue for training and guidance!

My dog and I got so much out of this class. He is a smart, high energy, headstrong puppy and needed basic training! The classes are well organized and relevant to our needs. Because the classes are small, we get individualized attention and Sue is very helpful with suggestions for each dog.

I am very pleased that we have lifetime access to the training videos and will no doubt refer back to them.

This has been a very positive experience for both my dog and me.
