What does it look like when you head out the door for a walk with your dog? I bet it does not look like this! Watch the video to see how Zooka and Blitzen normally exit for a walk.

Zooka and Blitzen are Vizslas. Vizslas are bird dogs. Hunters. Pointers. And boy do they display that when we head out on our walks.

At the time of this video, Zooka is three and Blitzen is two.

They are required to Wait at the door until released with Go. You might notice that Blitzen jumps the gun just a bit on his release. Normally, he is very good about waiting to be released, but once in a while he gets a bit excited about getting out the door.

Zooka, on the other hand, is very slow to get out the door. In this particular video, he happens to get out the door MUCH faster than he normally does.

Because the dogs are pointers, they are very good at patiently pointing out birds and other things, but also at stalking very very very slowly so as not to spook the prey.

Sometimes Zooka will lie down indoors and wait – his stalk mode gone super slo-mo. It can take some cajoling to get him out the door sometimes in less than a few minutes. Sometimes, as you will see in the video, I have to get walking a bit first and come back to close the door if I want him to get himself out the door without me giving a lot of prompting.

Once out the door, you can see that both dogs are in stalking mode and walking very slowly.

They are hoping to sneak up on a bunny around the corner of the garage.

Vizslas might be bird dogs, but first and foremost, Zooka and Blitzen are bunny dogs!

They will typically stalk very slowly until Blitzen gets to the corner of the garage. Then he will take off toward the chicken coop, hoping to startle a bunny. Blitzen will take off behind him or run around the other side of the garage in hopes Blitzen scares a bunny in that direction.

Fortunately, they have been entirely unsuccessful at catching any bunnies this way. But clearly, it has not reduced their hope that one day it will happen. It's good to have dreams!

How does the start of your walk look?
