Gunner was my very first Greyhound. I adopted him in 1993 and lost him to bone cancer in 2000.

As most dogs do – and most people, while we're at it – Gunner liked his routine. Morning walks, breakfast, evening walks, dinner, all of these things should be at around the same time each day.

Back then, I used to get up early during the week to get to work. We would get up between 5 and 5:30 am to get in a short walk before I headed to work. I was usually in the office no later than 7 am. I don't get up that early any more!

Since our weekday walks were early in the morning, Gunner was certain we should also do our weekend walks quite early as well. As most of us do, I preferred to sleep in a bit later on the mornings I did not have to go to work. Gunner was having none of that.

He was at least polite enough to not wake me up in any obnoxious way each morning. Rather, his method was to stand at my bedside and watch and wait. When I would open my eyes, he would be staring me in the face. As soon as he saw my eyes open, he would start wagging his tail and get so happy!

As soon as I woke up, he was certain we should head out for our walk right away.

And that's usually what we did. I would get up, get dressed and we would head out for our morning walk.

In most cases, that meant we got up and headed out on our walk while it was still dark out. Most days that I did not work, we watched the sun rise on our walk.

There were plenty of mornings at the time that I wish he would have slept in later on the weekends and on my days off. I do like my sleep!

Since he's been gone – over twenty years now – those are actually one of my favorite memories. Sunrise walks with Gunner. We saw some great sunrises. We had some really wonderful long peaceful walks before most people were out of bed.

Sometimes the things that might annoy you at the time become some of your fondest memories.
