The content below is the week summary of the update from our Vizsla breeder on the things she does with the puppies and where they are at in their development. The activities below are an example of what a reputable breeders does to help puppies prepare to live their best lives. This post is part of our How To Raise & Train A Vizsla section. This is the second week of the puppies' lives and they are introduced to stuffed animals, distinct odors through essential oils to get their noses working, sound desensitizing music so they do not react to thunder and toenail clipping.

Notes for week 2:

  • Still within the safety and confines of their whelping box
  • Already expert crawlers
    • can travel all over the whelping box
    • to reach mom
    • or crawl onto or off the heating pad
  • Began introducing stuffed animals
    • into the whelping box
    • some underneath the blanket to create ‘obstacles' for them to climb over
  • With 9 puppies, first time mom doing a great job
    • ensuring these guys are getting LOTS of milk
    • lots of nuturing
  • Eyes are starting to peek open on a few of them
  • So are the ears
    • continuing with sound desensitizing CD's
      • had some very severe thunderstorms which lasted several hours
      • some lightning strikes were very close to the house and the thunder claps were deafening at times
      • puppies had no concerns about the storms
        • thanks to a wonderfully calm mother
        • having spent hours listening to the Thunderstorms CD since birth
  • Noses already work well
    • introducing different distinct odors (essential oils on cotton balls) each day since day 3
      • helps develop this part of their brain
      • will prime the puppies for scent discrimination such as in Obedience, Tracking, Nosework, or bird work in the field
      • started diffusing Lavander EO & a Sleep blend in the bedroom, across the room from their whelping box
  • The last of their Bio-sensor exercises
  • Mom is asking to coming out of the bedroom
  • Mom is letting Great Grand Dam spend time with the puppies
  • Puppies got toenails clipped two more times
  • Note the fat little bellies on the puppies
    • spreading out and sleeping all over the whelping box
    • they can better regulate their body temperature
    • less need to huddle in a pile together for warmth

Our goal is to positively impact the lives of as many dogs and their families as we can, in part through our extensive library of video, infographics and text articles.
